Flexible Giving, Real Impact: 750+ Families Served

At Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, we are always listening for where support is needed most. When we recently reached out to a generous family about opportunities to strengthen our community, they turned the question back to us, asking where help was needed and graciously offering to provide it. The result has been transformative.

More than 750 families in San Mateo County have benefited from the donor’s extraordinary generosity. Through personal assistance funds distributed across eight trusted nonprofit partners, families facing immediate financial hardship received flexible, timely help when they needed it most.

As Laura Bent, CEO of Samaritan House, shared, “personal assistance funds are often the critical bridge that allows families to maintain employment, keep children in school, remain safely housed, and stay connected to healthcare and other essential supports”.

Assistance ranged widely — from emergency needs like rental assistance, utility payments, and transportation, to smaller but meaningful supports like school backpacks, healthy snacks, children’s books, clothing, rain ponchos, and classroom supplies. Individual grants ranged from approximately $30 for everyday essentials to around $2,000 or more for families facing severe financial hardship.

Each of the eight partner organizations brought these resources directly to the people they serve:

Samaritan House (pictured above left) helped individuals and families at critical moments by preventing homelessness and covering short-term gaps in rent or essential bills.

JobTrain provided support for transportation, classroom supplies, CPR and Live Scan fees, insurance, scrubs, and supplies for students in workforce – training programs.

Catholic Worker House provided a computer and winter clothing for a scholarship recipient and assisted families facing food insecurity, unexpected bills, and family emergencies.

Daly City Peninsula Partnership supported children and youth through tutoring, enrichment, and after-school programming.

Homework Central provided healthy snacks, take-home books, rain ponchos, and launched a new bilingual literacy model.

Ayudando Latinos A Soñar (ALAS) (pictured above right and below) provided children and youth summer programs in Half Moon Bay.

The Jackie Speier Foundation is in the process of distributing personal assistance funds to families throughout San Mateo County.

Peninsula Family Services supported the critical needs of clients and communities in San Mateo County.

The flexibility of these funds enabled organizations to respond quickly and compassionately to both urgent crises and everyday needs, strengthening family stability across our community. Families received timely assistance that helped them remain safely housed, continue their education and workforce training, care for their children, and navigate unexpected financial challenges.

We are proud to have been part of this effort and are deeply grateful to this donor family for their extraordinary commitment to San Mateo County. Their generosity has provided hope, opportunity, and practical support to hundreds of local families — helping them move forward during challenging times and build a stronger future.
