An Unforgettable Experience

PVF always loves to hear feedback from teachers about their experiences supported our Teacher Resource Grant Programs. Read a letter below from a 5th grade teachers at Willow Cove Elementary School in Contra Costa County who received an Excursion Grant to support transportation costs for students to visit the California Academy of Sciences. Feedback like this shows just how impactful small grants can be to a student’s education.

Our fifth grade field trip to the California Academy of Sciences was an unforgettable experience that left a lasting impression on every student who attended. From the moment we entered the museum, excitement filled the air as students eagerly explored the aquarium, rainforest dome, stingray habitat, and countless hands-on exhibits. The trip created endless smiles and moments of wonder as students discovered new animals, scientific concepts, and interactive displays that brought learning to life in ways that cannot always be achieved inside a classroom. For many students, this was more than just a field trip; it was an opportunity to see science, nature, and discovery in action.

The educational opportunities throughout the day were truly remarkable. Students asked thoughtful questions, made real-world connections to topics we had studied in class, and demonstrated curiosity at every turn. Whether observing sea creatures up close, learning about ecosystems, or playing in the outdoor educational area, the trip inspired meaningful conversations and deeper thinking. Many students who are usually quiet in the classroom became highly engaged and eager to share what they learned. Experiences like this remind us that education is not confined to textbooks, but can grow powerfully through exploration and hands-on learning.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the trip was seeing our special education students fully included and thriving throughout the experience. The visual stimulation, interactive exhibits, and sensory-rich activities created opportunities for engagement that matched many of their learning strengths. Their smiles, excitement, and enthusiasm were contagious as they explored alongside their peers. The trip fostered inclusion, friendship, and shared joy, showing every student that learning can be accessible, exciting, and meaningful for all learners.

Most importantly, a field trip like this can create both immediate and long-term impact. While students returned home excited about what they saw and learned, experiences such as these also help spark imagination and future aspirations. A single visit to a science museum can inspire a child to become a scientist, marine biologist, environmentalist, or teacher someday. Even years from now, many students will likely remember the wonder they felt during this trip. These experiences help children dream bigger, think creatively, and develop a lifelong appreciation for learning and discovery.
