Plastic Free Fridays: Expanding Our Impact Through Conscious Consumption
Guest blog post by Sierra Quitiquit, the Founder of Plastic Free Fridays, a Fiscally Sponsored Project of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation (PVF).
At Plastic Free Fridays, we believe that culture is one of the most powerful drivers of change and in recent months, we’ve continued to expand our reach through meaningful partnerships, storytelling, and community engagement.
We’re excited to share that Plastic Free Fridays has officially joined 1% for the Planet, aligning our work with a global network of businesses and organizations committed to environmental accountability. This milestone reinforces our commitment to transparency, impact, and collective action for a healthier planet.
A core pillar of our recent work has been collaborating with creators who are using their platforms to both educate and inspire action. We recognize that meaningful environmental change doesn’t just come from information—it comes from trusted voices who can translate complex issues into relatable, everyday choices.
Through partnerships with creators like Madeleine MacGillivray and Brown Girl Green, we’ve co-created content that raises awareness about plastic pollution while offering practical, accessible solutions grounded in environmental justice and cultural relevance.
In our collaboration with Madeleine MacGillivray, we take a closer look at “How to Tackle Micro-plastics” addressing how a global issue starts by focusing on one piece at a time. The campaign highlights how small, intentional shifts—like reducing reliance on synthetic materials or supporting local initiatives—can collectively drive meaningful change.
Similarly, “Plastic Free Skincare” with Brown Girl Green explores skincare, encouraging audiences to rethink everyday routines through a more sustainable lens. By making these choices more approachable and culturally relevant, the content helps individuals see themselves as active participants in a larger movement.
These collaborations are helping us meet audiences where they are: on social media – making climate-conscious living feel both relatable and actionable.
We’ve also deepened our partnerships with aligned brands that are leveraging their platforms for good. One standout example is Activist Skincare, a brand that embodies sustainability and transparency while actively promoting a plastic-free lifestyle. Together, we’re demonstrating how businesses can be a force for environmental responsibility.
Finally, we continue to encourage our community to engage with storytelling that educates and empowers. A powerful resource we recommend is Plastic Detox, now available on Netflix – a compelling look at the pervasive impact of plastics on our health and environment, and what we can do about it.
As we grow, our mission remains the same: to shift culture, inspire action, and build a future free from plastic pollution—together. This mission would not be possible without the support of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation.
