Art that Reflects the School Community

In grantmaking, PVF Donors, teacher grants, Visiting Artist in the Classroom Program

By Andrea Smith, PVF Program and Communications Associate

Our Visiting Artist in the Classroom Grant Program consistently generate some of the most beautiful reports from teachers of students who often have little or no other access to arts education. By bringing a wide range of artists and creative professionals into schools, the program inspires students through innovative, hands-on learning experiences that encourage out-of-the-box thinking.

Whether the grant supports a musician helping students connect music to everyday learning, a textile artist introducing new forms of creative expression, or a poet guiding students in developing their literary and public speaking skills, the impact is clear. The Visiting Artist in the Classroom Grant enriches classroom instruction by engaging students in creative processes that deepen learning, foster self-expression, and bring renewed energy and life into the classroom environment.

At Pescadero Elementary School, TK-5th grade students had the opportunity to work closely with visiting artists and bring their ideas to life through a vibrant, meaningful mural.

The murals created by the students are full of energy, creativity, and purpose. Each piece reflects their voices, stories, and connection to their school community.

“We are incredibly grateful to Philanthropic Ventures for their generous support. This experience would not have been possible without your generosity, and we—along with the students and educators—truly appreciate your continued support of arts education.”

These projects are a powerful reminder of how impactful arts funding can be, especially in school communities where creative opportunities may otherwise be limited.

Funding for the Visiting Artist in the Classroom Grant is still currently available. If you’re a TK–12th teacher at a low-income public school in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, or San Francisco County, we encourage you to explore this opportunity. Visit our website to review the application requirements and apply today to bring a visiting artist into your classroom.

Together, we can continue to inspire creativity, collaboration, and meaningful learning through art.
