Supporting First-Generation Young Women in Half Moon Bay
By Sheryl Young, PVF San Mateo County Program Director
Nancy Noriega, the chair of the Judy Macias Scholarship Fund, recently announced that a new round of scholarships will be awarded this school year to three female first-generation high school students at Half Moon Bay High School. This scholarship program was created in honor of the beloved Judy Macias, a longtime advocate and nonprofit leader on the Coastside. Judy firmly believed that college education for young women could open up new opportunities and create lifelong financial security.
These scholarships include $2,500 each year for four years, as well as a mentor to help students navigate the college experience and career decisions. Eligible students should have at least a 3.0 grade point average and plan to begin college immediately after graduation. Applications will be available in January 2026, with recipients selected by May.
Five young women were awarded during the first round of scholarships in 2021 and paired with mentors who’ve guided them through the challenges of college life.
Among them are Mitzi and Michelle Hernandez Zamora, both recent UC Berkeley graduates now working toward their goal of entering medical school. Veronica Noriega, a senior at California State University, Monterey Bay, is majoring in biology and recently completed a summer job at a local café. As she enters her final year, she plans to take on an internship before launching her career. Veronica shared that while the financial support was crucial, the mentorship made all the difference.
“The scholarship helped me, but the mentorship was invaluable,” Veronica said. “My parents were very supportive, but they didn’t have the experience to guide me through choosing classes or internships. Having a mentor helped me see what steps to take to reach my goals.”
Sandy Lopez and Angelica Hernandez-Torres are also finishing their studies and preparing for what’s next—continuing the legacy of possibility that Judy envisioned.
