Earlier this month, Oaktown Boulders welcomed PVF staff and a lively group of 3rd and 4th graders from Lazear Charter Academy  for an afternoon of climbing, movement, and teamwork. The outing was made possible by Forest and Tree, a designated fund at Philanthropic Ventures Foundation that is committed to expanding nature-based and active learning opportunities for young people in Oakland.

From the moment the students arrived, their excitement was easy to see. Leslie Magaña, Outdoor Education Coordinator at Forest and Tree shared that the kids had been talking about the trip all week. Many had climbed before and couldn’t wait to return. They were eager to challenge themselves, try new routes, and enjoy time with their classmates in a fun and supportive space.

As soon as climbing began, the gym filled with energy. Some students headed straight for taller walls, determined to reach higher than they had before. Others chose routes that let them practice their balance and problem-solving at a lower height. No matter where they climbed, the encouragement from classmates was constant. Students pointed out good holds to try, offered cheering from below, and proudly compared their chalk-covered hands between attempts.

These small moments showed the heart of what Forest and Tree hopes to provide for Oakland youth. Their goal is to create more opportunities for kids to be active, explore new environments, and build lifelong skills. Experiences like rock climbing help students practice focus, patience, and resilience. They also strengthen communication and trust as kids learn to support one another through new challenges.

For many families, access to consistent outdoor or movement-based activities can be limited. Forest and Tree helps bridge that gap by supporting programs and field trips that make these experiences possible. Whether through climbing, hiking, gardening, or other hands-on activities, the fund is dedicated to helping students discover the joy of staying active and connected to the world around them.

Throughout the afternoon, the Lazear students showed curiosity, confidence, and kindness. Their teamwork and excitement highlighted how valuable these experiences can be for growing minds and bodies. By giving kids a chance to try new things, push themselves, and celebrate their progress, Forest and Tree helps open doors to healthier, more active futures.

Forest and Tree remains committed to supporting Oakland youth as they climb, explore, and discover all they are capable of—one adventure at a time. Visit Forest and Tree’s website to learn more about how you can support their cause.
