Announcing the First Josh Childress Scholarship Recipients
At the close of the 2021-2022 school year, the committee of The Josh Childress Foundation Scholarship Fund announced college scholarships of $10,000 to two outstanding graduating students at Mayfair High School in Lakewood, California. These scholarships aim to recognize student athletes and support their college education.
For the coming 2022-2023 academic year, the Josh Childress Scholarship recipients are:
Devin Lane – Devin played Men’s Basketball and Volleyball during his time at Mayfair High School and will be attending the University of California, Irvine.
“Being a student athlete to me means to not back down from any challenge given and to have good time management as juggling academics and sports at the same time can be conflicting at times. It means to set an example to those around you and to be a leader in the classroom and on the court. It also means to me to be a student first by focusing more on academics and taking care of business in the classroom, and then be an athlete second by putting as much hard work on the court as I have done in school. The most important lesson I have learned during my time being a student athlete is to make the most of every learning opportunity”
Mya Tillman – Mya played Women’s Volleyball at Mayfair High School and will be attending California State University, Dominguez Hills where she will continue her volleyball career.
“The world of volleyball and sports in general, is a beautiful experience that I wish younger women could be exposed to, to set them in the right direction early on in their lives. From a young age, sports taught me how to create balance in my life, time-management, and social skills. The sports world is beautiful because of the opportunities and lifetime connections created. My biggest lesson learned within the past two years was how to keep working towards my goal even when it felt like the world was against me. The chance to continue my education is only the beginning.”
