BAIA: Virtual Workshops

 In PVF News

By Savannah Lira, Program Officer

Last month, our Bay Area Inspire Awardees and Advisors gathered together for our first ever Virtual Grantwriting Workshop. This awards program has always been centered around community, and it has been especially important for us at PVF to make our communities feel supported during these times.

What better way to do so than a gathering as close to in person possible – Zoom! With 2020 turning all our plans on its head, several of our 2019-2020 cohort of BAIA Awardees are working towards turning their grant-funded BAIA ideas into a non-profit or fiscally sponsored project. They joined PVF for a 90 minute gathering as they begin to navigate that process, led by their talented Advisor Rita Bullwinkel.

Rita is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area and the author of the story collection Belly Up, which won the 2018 Believer Book Award and was named one of the best books of the year by both The San Francisco Chronicle and BuzzFeed. In addition to an author, Rita is an experienced grantwriter and fundraiser.

Rita shared her experience and expertise on:

  • The different types of charitable giving vehicles: Fiscal Sponsorship vs. 501(c)3 vs. 501(c)4
  • Tools for researching open grant applications: Guidestar/Candid/Foundation Directory Online
  • How to read a 990
  • How to craft a grant application narrative
  • Building relationships with foundations and individual donors

The questions asked and information shared was inspiring, and we’re excited to see what our young community leaders do next!
